What Is a Good AAMC PREview Score?
How to think about PREview scoring, why the score is only one application signal, and how students should use practice results without overreacting.

Everyone wants to know what counts as a good PREview score. The honest answer: it depends on context. PREview is one signal in your application, not a stand-in for the MCAT, clinical experience, service, grades, secondaries, or interviews.
That doesn’t make the score meaningless. It just means you shouldn’t treat it like a second MCAT.
What the Score Is Trying to Represent
PREview is built around professional readiness and situational judgment. A higher score should mean you’re rating professional responses more consistently across scenarios.
In plain terms, it means you’re reliably spotting which action best protects the right duty: honesty, patient welfare, teamwork, accountability, cultural awareness, reliability, or knowing when to escalate.
Why Practice Scores Can Feel Noisy
Your scores can bounce around on small practice sets, and that’s normal. Each scenario packs in several judgment calls, so one bad habit can drag down several answers at once.
Say you keep overrating responses that act fast but skip communication. You’ll miss across totally different scenario types, even though the real error is the same one every time.
That’s why you review for patterns, not panic.
How To Use a PREview Score
Treat your score as feedback, not a verdict. Ask yourself:
- Am I missing a specific competency?
- Am I overrating decisive action without enough communication?
- Am I underrating accountability or feedback-seeking responses?
- Am I dodging escalation when a situation is unsafe or outside my role?
Those questions move your prep forward. Staring at the number doesn’t.
How PREview Fits With the Application
Admissions is never about one number. A PREview score can add useful context, especially at schools that lean on situational judgment testing, but it won’t rewrite the rest of your file.
