How This Works

Our calculator starts with real admissions data. For each medical school or tier, we use the median MCAT score of the most recently admitted class as the baseline.

From there, the calculator adjusts your target based on where your GPA falls relative to the school/tier median. If your GPA is above the median, your target decreases slightly. If below, it increases because you'll need a stronger MCAT to compensate. Science GPA is factored separately since admissions committees pay close attention to prerequisite performance.

Finally, holistic adjustments apply for factors like URM status, research experience, publications, clinical hours, in-state residency, and unique life experiences. These shift the threshold modestly — they don't replace a strong MCAT, but they reflect how admissions committees evaluate your full profile.

Frequently Asked Questions

What MCAT score do I need for medical school?

The MCAT score you need depends on the type of program. DO programs typically accept students around 504-506, state MD programs look for 508-512, and top 20 programs expect 517 or higher. Admissions are holistic — GPA, extracurriculars, and personal statement all matter alongside your MCAT.

What MCAT score do I need for Harvard?

Harvard Medical School's median MCAT for admitted students is approximately 521. To be competitive, aim for 520 or above, though exceptional applicants with scores of 517-519 are occasionally admitted with extraordinary research or experiences.

Can a high MCAT offset a low GPA?

To some extent, yes. A strong MCAT can partially compensate for a lower GPA by demonstrating academic readiness. However, most schools have GPA thresholds, and a very low GPA (below 3.0) will be difficult to overcome regardless of MCAT score.

What is a good MCAT score for DO schools?

The average MCAT for admitted DO students is around 504-506. A score of 508 or above makes you a strong candidate at most DO programs. Some newer DO schools accept students with scores in the 498-502 range.

How important is the MCAT vs GPA?

Both are critical. Your GPA demonstrates sustained academic performance, while the MCAT is a standardized measure across different universities. Most admissions committees weigh them roughly equally.
