Stop juggling spreadsheets and a paywall
Researching medical schools usually means a $28 MSAR subscription in one tab, a dozen school websites in others, and a spreadsheet you maintain by hand. The Med School Explorer pulls the facts that actually drive your decision — median MCAT and GPA, acceptance rate, in-state vs. out-of-state cost, class size, and location — into one searchable, filterable place, and adds the one thing a database can't tell you on its own: where you realistically stand.
How to use it
Enter your GPA and MCAT at the top. Every school instantly re-sorts by fit and shows a Reach → Likely band based on its accepted-student range and the national AAMC acceptance grid. Filter by MD/DO, state, public/private, cost, and selectivity, then star the schools you're considering to build your list.
How we estimate the numbers schools don't publish
A few of the most useful figures here aren't published openly by most schools — the wider 10th–90th MCAT percentile range, the in-state vs. out-of-state score split, and residency-specific acceptance estimates. Premier fills those gaps with a proprietary statistical model. In broad strokes, it learns the relationships that tie the numbers schools do publish — medians, overall acceptance rates, and in-state vs. out-of-state class makeup — to the fuller picture, calibrated across every US MD program and continuously checked against officially reported figures (the score ranges typically land within about a point).
The exact formulas are proprietary, but the principles are simple: estimated values are shown to one decimal and clearly labeled as estimates, and the residency figures describe a school's typical in-state preference, not a guaranteed outcome. Anything a school reports officially is shown as-is and always takes priority.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is this a free alternative to the MSAR?
Yes. The Med School Explorer compiles the same kinds of admissions facts — median MCAT and GPA, acceptance rates, in-state vs. out-of-state, tuition, and more — from each school's own published data. Browsing, searching, and filtering are free with no login; a free account adds the personalized tools (your GPA/MCAT "can I get in?" chances and a saved list that syncs across devices). It's not affiliated with or endorsed by the AAMC.
How does the "Can I get in?" rating work?
Create a free account, enter your GPA and MCAT, and each school shows a band — Likely, Target, Reach, or Far reach. It's a comparison, not a prediction: we overlay your stats on the school's accepted-student range and the national AAMC acceptance-rate grid, and factor in in-state status at public schools. It cannot account for holistic review, essays, experiences, or interviews.
Where does the data come from?
Core stats come from each school's published class profile and AAMC's free national data. Some fields (tuition, class size, % out-of-state) are still being verified school-by-school and show "Not reported" where we don't yet have a sourced figure.
How accurate are the MCAT score ranges?
We start from each school's published median, then use Premier's own statistical model to estimate the full percentile spread (10th–90th) and the in-state vs. out-of-state split — the figures most schools, and the paywalled databases, keep behind a login. The model is calibrated across every US MD program and validated to land within about one point of officially reported figures. Because it learns the pattern across all schools rather than one program's single-year class, for smaller and newer programs it's often a steadier, more current estimate than the raw reported numbers. Estimated values are shown to one decimal and labeled as estimates.
Can I save schools and build a list?
Yes — with a free account, tap the star on any school to add it to your list, then open "My list & compare" to see them side by side. Your list is tied to your account, so it follows you across every device.
